Who we are & what we do The National Defense University Foundation is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization established in 1982 to support and enhance the mission and goals of the National Defense University (NDU). NDU is America's preeminent institution for military, civilian, and diplomatic national security education, research, outreach and strategic studies. The main campus is located at Fort McNair in Washington, DC.
The NDU Foundation promotes excellence and innovation in education by nurturing high standards of scholarship, leadership, and professionalism. It brings together dedicated individuals, corporations, organizations, and groups that are committed to advancing America's national security and defense capabilities through NDU.
The Foundation provides NDU with privately funded resources for:
- Education, Research, Library and Teaching Activities
- Academic Chairs, Faculty Fellowships and Student Awards
- Endowments, Honorariums, Seminars and Confererences
- Multicultural, International, and Interagency Programs
- National Security and Homeland Defense Outreach
Why we do it The National Defense University depends on the NDU Foundation to support university activities that are not covered by Federal appropriations. Many of the activities at the heart of a sound university environment--endowments, honorariums, student awards--cannot be paid for by government funds. In addition, NDU's military faculty and staff are prohibited from fundraising for the university. Thus, the NDU Foundation offers Americans an opportunity to invest in the nation's security by supporting these activities.
